INTRODUCTION
In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, the world has witnessed a significant
upheaval in economic and social structures, presenting unique challenges and opportunities
for social enterprises globally, and particularly in Azerbaijan. This thesis explores the critical
role of Chief Executive Officers (CEOs) in Azerbaijani social enterprises during this
tumultuous period, focusing on their strategies, leadership styles, and adaptability in the face
of unprecedented challenges.
Problem:
The COVID-19 pandemic has created a complex landscape for social enterprises,
particularly in Azerbaijan, posing significant challenges in terms of leadership and strategic
decision-making. This study addresses these challenges by focusing on the experiences of
CEOs in navigating this crisis.
Goal:
The goal of this study is to provide an in-depth understanding of how Azerbaijani
social enterprise CEOs have managed and adapted to the pandemic's challenges, particularly
in maintaining organizational resilience and adapting leadership strategies.
Objectives:
To examine the decision-making processes of CEOs in Azerbaijani social enterprises
during the pandemic.
To investigate the strategic changes and leadership styles adopted by these CEOs in
response to COVID-19.
To analyze how these leaders have balanced their social missions with economic
sustainability amidst the crisis.
To explore the role of Azerbaijani social enterprise CEOs as innovators and
trailblazers in a rapidly evolving sector.
Limitations:
This study is subject to inherent limitations of qualitative research, including potential
biases due to its reliance on document analysis and semi-structured interviews. Furthermore,
the findings are context-specific to Azerbaijani social enterprises and may not be
generalizable to other settings or social enterprise models.
Lubberink (2019) underscores the significance of innovative leadership in times of
crisis. In the Azerbaijani context, this translates into the strategic agility of CEOs in social
enterprises, who have had to innovate rapidly to sustain operations and meet emerging
societal needs. The thesis will explore these leadership strategies, illustrating how they align
with global trends in crisis management and innovative leadership.
Chaib De Mares (2021) provides insight into the development of social
entrepreneurship in Azerbaijan, emphasizing the unique challenges faced by social
enterprises, including legal and operational hurdles. This perspective is particularly relevant
in understanding how CEOs navigated these complexities during the pandemic. The thesis
will examine the adaptive strategies and resilience of these enterprises, considering the added
pressure of the global health...
