INTRODUCTION
In theory, when enacting gender-neutral laws, the representatives of the state are obliged to
consider the views of all voters and enact laws that are favourable to each gender. In practice,
however, this policy is not possible because of the fundamental roots of patriarchy over the years
(Hughes & Paxton, 2019). Women, naturally perceived as the "submissive gender", have made
impressive gains in the last century in their quest for political and legal equality. However, it is
important to realise that the distortion of gender role models, which equates men's physical
strength and natural dominance with the right to take responsibility and control of the family or
larger community units, and women as submissive and confined to the private sector, is a
stereotyped attitude that is manifested in a variety of spheres, such as women's involvement in
politics, discrimination in the workplace, and violence in the domestic and social environment.
Globally, more than one in three women experience psychological and/or physical domestic
violence, which endangers women's health and reproductive systems, hinders their participation
in society, restricts their rights, and causes psychological suffering for both women and their
offspring.
