Introduction
Climate change is one of the most pressing and complex challenges facing
the world today. Defined as long-term alterations in temperature,
precipitation patterns, and other aspects of the Earth’s climate system, it
is driven primarily by human activities, especially the burning of fossil
fuels. The consequences of a warming planet are already evident—from
rising sea levels and melting glaciers to more frequent extreme weather
events. As this global crisis intensifies, it demands urgent action from
governments, businesses, and individuals alike.
Causes of Climate Change
The primary cause of modern climate change is the increase in
greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Carbon dioxide (CO₂), methane (CH₄),
and nitrous oxide (N₂O) trap heat in the Earth’s atmosphere, a process
known as the greenhouse effect. While this process is natural and
essential for life on Earth, human activity—particularly since the Industrial
Revolution—has significantly amplified it.
Burning coal, oil, and gas for energy and transportation releases vast
amounts of CO₂. Agriculture contributes to methane and nitrous oxide
emissions, while deforestation reduces the planet’s ability to absorb CO₂.
Industrial processes and the waste sector also release various GHGs.
Together, these activities have dramatically increased atmospheric GHG
concentrations, leading to global warming.
