Executive Summary
Music festivals have an artistic council, an organizing committee, organizers and sponsors.
There are international ones (musicians from several countries participate) and local ones (mostly in
one city or country). There are international music festivals periodically held in several countries,
among them the International Festival of the Contemporary Music Society, which has been held
every year in a different European country since 1923, and the Baltica folklore festival (since 1987,
held annually in Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia). Many countries have several prestigious, state-
sponsored festivals among their numerous music festivals. Such festivals have a great impact on the
spread of music culture, new music works are written on their order. Big music festivals often cover
music of various genres and styles and last up to several months. Smaller specialized festivals
(opera, early music, chamber music, church music, folklore, jazz, popular music and others) attract
a target audience. Music events are often included in other types of festival programs (festivals
dedicated to anniversaries of cities, states or other occasions include music, drama events,
exhibitions, fairs, etc.).

The impacts of holding a new music festival
Introduction
Variegated style (or lack of style) is the main feature of the new festival model. A music
festival is no longer a gathering place for representatives of one subculture, where clearly genre-
defined music sounds. Festivals with ambitions to expand have softened their original principles
and broadened the spectrum of music, thereby broadening their audiences. Most of the festivals
therefore grew so suddenly (more precisely, they already appeared when they were big) that they
did not have those original principles. Their main principle is commercial - to attract as many
people and sponsors as possible, so the selection of performing groups depends on the conscience of
the organizers, but not on the genre. It is worth choosing a big festival not only because it takes
place, for example, by the sea, but also if you are a die-hard music fan. On the one hand, I am happy
about the variety of music: the stage is given even to very young groups; commercial sponsors are
attracted, thus creating a precedent for supporting an empty music culture, the money also creates
better technical conditions, allowing to bring at least some more prominent foreign artists. On the
other hand, the motives are clear: it is much more economical to invite physical persons, and the
listeners who gather are not whimsical. It is probably true that the big festivals are not intended for
metropolitan, but provincial audiences, who do not have the opportunity to go to concerts on the
terraces and lofts of big cities every other day. It is not worth getting angry that strange people
come to the festival, and that minors come to specific festivals. It is naive to think that only serious
music fans should gather at mass festivals. Anyway, it is obvious that the big music festivals are far
from playing in the same league as the most important events in the world - "Positivus" in Latvia
and "Opener" in Poland, "Burning Man" in the USA. The "foreign stars" who appear at many music
festivals cannot be compared to those who come to neighboring festivals. Most of them are...
